The Clean 15

Last post I talked about the Dirty Dozen, aka the 12 foods with the highest pesticide content. This time we’ll look at the other side of the coin, and discuss the Clean 15. The Clean 15 is a list of produce tested and found to have the lowest amount of pesticides.

Buying organic food is always best when possible and if that’s what you’re doing then keep it up!

For those of us however, who are looking to save some money at the grocery store, these are the foods with the lowest pesticide content which make them safer to eat non-organically.  So if your budget doesn’t allow you to buy everything organic then start with the dirty dozen and buy the non-organic variety of the Clean 15.

The Clean 15 in order from least pesticide content to most:

  1. Sweet corn
  2. Avocados
  3. Pineapples
  4. Cabbage
  5. Onions
  6. Sweet peas frozen
  7. Papayas
  8. Asparagus
  9. Mangos
  10. Eggplant
  11. Honeydew melon
  12. Kiwi
  13. Cantaloupe
  14. Cauliflower
  15. Grapefruit

The foods on the Clean 15 list are less heavily sprayed with pesticides compared to their counterparts on the Dirty Dozen list.  Therefore if you’re looking to limit the amount of organic food you need to buy, the Clean 15 is the safest place to start.  Enjoy these non-organic foods without sweating about the toxins.

Do you buy organic vegetables? Will knowing what foods are the more heavily sprayed with pesticides effect how you shop for fruits and veggies?
